Making the decision to go to college is big, let alone picking what you are going to major in. Most people know what they are going to major in from a young age. Perhaps they always wanted to be a kindergarten teacher or a chemist. However, not everyone knows exactly what they want to do for the rest of their working career and that is alright. Just making the decision to go to college is a big enough step in the right direction. Still, when you enter the college environment you will find yourselfbombarded with the same question over and over again: what are majoring in. You will be asked by peers, professors, and family and friends. But you do not have to know the answer right away. It is ok to take a few years in college and figure out where you belong.
The most important thing to remember about picking a major is that you have two years of pre-requiset courses before you even enter your course of study program. While many major programs require that you have taken a certain course, there is still a wide variety of classes that you will be required to take simply because they are mandatory before you get to your actual course work.
You should also consider what really interests you. While the point of going to college is to ensure that you will be able to make good living after college, you have to remember that you also have a career of around thirty years ahead of you. The course work that you enter, and the career that you will have afterward needs to be something that you can live with and enjoy. For example, if you really love to paint but think that you should become an EMT because you will have job security, you need to think about what means more to you. For many people job security will always be more important than doing something that they love, while others think that having to be in a job they don’t enjoy, even with benefits, would kill them.
