Education and the Job Market

All through childhood you probably heard that getting an education was the best way to succeed in the world. You parents probably pushed you to get good grades, be on the honor roll, and go to college. And while we hate to admit it, our parents were definitely right.

Not only does having an education mean that you are in fact educated, it means that you were able to stick with something for the long haul. To an employer, the fact that you have finished college means that you have stuck with something and you are likely to stick with them as an employee. Most people who have finished college know what it takes to graduate. There are many late nights, projects that you hate, and professors that you do not get along with. Many of these qualities are the same things that employers look for. Employers are looking for someone who can handle a wide variety of projects, whether they like them or not, and be able to get along with a wide variety of people. The fact that you have proven that you have finished college means that you can complete projects with a deadline.

There are other reasons that applicants with college degrees are more likely to get a job than applicants without college degrees as well. The simple truth of the matter is that college graduates have a higher degree of education. The things that you learn in college are things that you will take with your for the rest of your life. You learn to develop your thoughts, collect your opinions, and communicate what you are thinking in a more articulate manner. You also take classes that will help future your skills towards the career that you want.

While the fact that your parents were right about going to college is probably a hard pill to swallow, the truth is that if you have a college education you are more likely to get a job than if you do not have a college education.
